If you’re looking for ways to help your scar heal beautifully (and make the whole process a little easier), let’s talk about silicone scar patches - one of the unsung heroes of postpartum recovery.

What Are Silicone Scar Patches, and Why Should You Care?

Silicone scar patches are thin, flexible sheets infused with medical-grade silicone that work their magic by creating an optimal healing environment for your scar. Think of them as little protective shields that keep the skin hydrated, reduce tension, and minimise the appearance of scars over time. Science backs them too! Studies show that silicone can flatten, soften, and fade scars which is why they’re becoming more widely used for post-op scar recovery.

How Do They Work?

Silicone scar patches work in a few key ways:

  • Hydration Boost: They lock in moisture, preventing the scar from becoming dry and raised.

  • Tension Reduction: By covering the scar, they reduce tension on the skin, which can help prevent thick, raised scars (like hypertrophic or keloid scars).

  • Barrier Protection: They act as a physical shield, protecting your incision from irritation caused by clothing or everyday movements.

  • Collagen Regulation: They help regulate collagen production, keeping your scar smooth rather than bumpy and uneven.

When Can You Start Using Silicone Scar Patches?

Before slapping one on, make sure:

  • Your incision is fully closed (no open wounds or scabbing).

  • You have the all-clear from your doctor or midwife (always check before trying new recovery aids).

Most people can start using silicone patches around 1-3 weeks postpartum, but again - check with your LMC (lead maternity carer) or doctor first.

How to Use Silicone Scar Patches

  1. Clean and dry the affected area.
  2. Remove the patch from the protective film cover.
  3. Cut the patch to comfortably cover the scar area.
  4. Peel back the adhesive patch and discard the backing liner.
  5. Apply the patch by gently pressing the adhesive side down around the scar (not directly on top of the scar).
  6. Leave on for up to 24 hours. If you need to wash the area, simply take off the patch and re-apply once you’ve dried.
  7. One scar patch can be used for up to 7 days, or until the patch has begun to deteriorate and lose adhesiveness before re-applying a new patch
  8. For best results, we recommend using for 3-6 months (or longer for stubborn scars)
